Environmental Benefits

We all would like to do our part to improve our air quality and conserve our natural resources. As we begin to realize and respect the fragility of our planet's ecosystem, clean power choices like PV become extremely important. Strip mining of coal and "fracking" to extract natural gas to run our power plants is unnecessary, at least to the extent that renewable power is generated. Silicon – the primary component of solar cells – is cheap, plentiful and produced with very little environmental impact. Because solar panels burn no fuel and have no moving parts, PV systems are clean and silent. As we become more aware of greenhouse gases, chemicals introduced into the earth by fracking and their detrimental effects on our planet, clean energy alternatives like PV become more important than ever.

Lower Air Conditioner Loads

Solar panels shade the roof and have been shown to reduce the amount of heat energy reaching the roof by 38% and to cool the ceiling temperature by five degrees. The savings from reduced air conditioning use amounted to 5% of the total cost of the solar energy system over the course of its life. Other more extensive studies show that solar panels reduce the surface temperature of a white roof by 40° F and 61° F for a black roof, further reducing attic temperatures and the amount of heat transmitted through the ceiling into the living space.


Unlike wind energy, which requires a pole at least sixty feet in height for efficiency, photovoltaic modules are mounted in the plane of the roof, for most residential applications, and are unobtrusive. Sleek black modules in black frames mounted close to the roof can give a home a more modern look and identify the owner as someone who cares about the environment as well about the look of his or her home and the size of its electricity bill.
